After years of being at each other's throats, three Minnesota promotions are coming together to host a mega event at Target Center on April 28. CFX, Driller/SEG and Brutaal are working together to present CFX 33, a professional and amateur event that will feature many of the state's top fighters. CFX and Driller/SEG finally met up and agreed to work together a few weeks ago, and Brutaal recently jumped on board. The organizations previously were at odds. "As the entire state knows, we've all had our differences in the past," CFX's Gavin Rydell said. "We had a meeting and decided to put all our differences aside for the sake of MMA in Minnesota and to start allowing all the fighters more opportunity to work together. So far, it's been great. Everyone is really excited, and I'm really happy that we're all able to work together. We've put everything in the past and we're all moving forward. I know Jeremy (Bjornberg) and Nick (Gamst) are excited, too. I think it's going to be a great thing for the sport." Rydell made sure to note that he's not the lone matchmaker. "It's a collaborative effort between all of us. Jeremy and Nick are helping with the matchmaking, and I've looked for input from (Minnesota MMA News) as well as far as what matchups Minnesota wants to see."
Tickets for CFX 33 go on sale on Feb. 15. "That's a presale, and it will be through ticketmaster.com, but the official on-sale date will be some time in March. Tickets will start at $30 and go up from there." Though tickets aren't on sale just yet, Rydell was able to officially announce three fights Friday, including the night's main event. Minnesota's own Travis "Carefree" Perzynski is returning to the cage to take on one of Japan's top prospects in Yoshihiro Koyama. Perzynski, who is one of Minnesota's top prospects at 155 pounds, has been out of action since last April. He has since started training with Tom Schmitz at Spartan Martial Arts. Perzynski, who previously trained with Team Crazy and the Minnesota Fight Factory, has a career mark of 30-6-1 and is ranked No. 4 in Minnesota at 155. He was previously ranked No. 1 before taking time off. The biggest win of Perzynski's career came in December of 2009, when he knocked off eventual Bellator champion Pat Curran. Koyama has an 11-2-1 career record. He rolled up a 10-1-1 mark from 2005 through 2008 before taking two years away from the sport. He returned to action in 2010 and has gone 1-1 since then, though his one victory was a big one. Koyama took out Shinji Sasaki in a fight for the Shooto Pan-Pacific World Championship. "I love our main event," Rydell said. "It's a good fight for Travis stylistically. And I feel like if Travis wins, he's probably headed to a huge promotion. It's a chance for Travis to move up that ladder quickly. I can seriously see him getting a shot in the UFC if he can get by Koyama. And for Koyama, it's a chance to prove himself in America. He's got a sick ground game, so Travis will have to be ready for that. It's been a while since Minnesota fans have had the chance to watch Travis compete, so that's exciting to bring him back to action." One other pro fight is locked and loaded for April 28. WEC veteran Courtney Buck is set to take on Gabe Greenburg. Both fighters are looking to bounce back after tough losses and both are still highly regarded at 145 pounds. Greenburg, who spent time training under Greg Jackson in New Mexico, is 15-3 as a professional, but he's coming off a loss to top-ranked Mitch Jackson at the last Target Center show. Greenburg is currently ranked No. 4 at 145. Buck also fought on the last Target Center show, suffering a setback to Melvin Blumer. Buck's 10-5 as a professional and is ranked No. 3 at 145. He went on a three-fight losing streak, dropping two fights in the WEC and one to top prospect Brandon Bergeron, in 2009-10, but Buck has since bounced back to win three of his last four fights. Buck has another fight lined up before the Target Center show, though Rydell doesn't anticipate that fight altering this bout. "Buck vs. Greenburg, why in the hell has that fight not already happened? That's one Minnesota fans should have seen years ago," Rydell said. "I love this fight. It's a fight Minnesota deserves. It's two of the most exciting guys at 145, and they're both ranked near the top of the class. They're going to put on a show. I personally love this fight. I've wanted to see it for years, and now I'm glad it's finally happening." Rydell also was able to announce one amateur fight Friday. Previously ranked Branden Noetzel returns to action to face unbeaten prospect Davonta Nunn (3-0). Noetzel has just one career fight, but he stepped up to take on a ranked Justin Rheaume at the Target Center in December of 2010. Noetzel took it to Rheaume, finishing him off just 1:31 into the first round when Rheaume submitted due to strikes. Nunn has quickly shot up the rankings at one of the state's weakest weights, 205 pounds. Nunn recorded all three of his wins in 2011, fighting for Driller/SEG. Rydell said there's bad blood between Noetzel and Nunn. "Nunn called out Noetzel on Facebook, and that kind of got Branden back into it," Rydell said. "Branden makes his living as a tattoo artist, and he's a very good one. He was pretty much retired, focusing on his tattoo business; his hands are pretty valuable for him to be fighting. But Davonta Nunn got him out of retirement, so that's exciting. I'm happy to see him back in there, because Branden has loads of talent. He can compete with the top guys at that weight." Rydell said Minnesota MMA fans should expect the biggest card of 2012. "We will have at least 20 bouts that night; in fact, we're looking at even more than that at the moment," Rydell said. "The event will start early, and we're trying to make the whole thing an experience. The fights also will be aired at a later date on Samurai TV in Japan and on the Fight Network in Canada. The Fight Network also is releasing an 18-episode Best of CFX series in about a month, and they're making those available on DVD. We're also working with Inside MMA, hoping to get them to do some coverage on HDNet. We'll also be live-streaming the weigh-ins, and we'll release more info on that as time goes on. "Our plan right now is to announce matchups through Minnesota MMA News every week for the next few months. We'll also give away some tickets when we get much closer to the event. But grab tickets from Ticketmaster in later this month or from participating fighters. It's going to be a sweet event, and I'm just pumped that we were all able to make this work and come together to give Minnesota MMA fans what they want to see." |
