Bellator made Roger Huerta's next fight official today. The former Augsburg wrestler will return to the cage on Oct. 21 during Bellator 33. Huerta will be matched up in a "super fight" against Eddie Alvarez. The fight will take place in Alvarez's hometown, Philadelphia, at the Liacouras Center on the campus of Temple University. As usual, Bellator 33 will air live on Fox Sports Net. Though Alvarez is the current lightweight champion, this will be a non-title fight. Alvarez was to fight Pat Curran for the title, but Curran, who won the Season Two lightweight tournament, due to an injury. Curran knocked Huerta out of the tournament in the semifinals. "Roger Huerta, Philadelphia, Oct. 21 — this is a dream fight for me," said Alvarez in a statement released by Bellator. "I've never even lost a fight here in the United States, so I'm definitely not going to start in my hometown of Philadelphia with all of my people there. That's not going to happen. Not a chance." Alvarez enters the fight on an impressive five-fight winning streak, including 10 victories in his past 11 fights. He's 20-2 overall and 4-0 in Bellator. Eight of his past 10 wins have come by stoppage. He defeated Toby Imada in the Season One finals. Alvarez later beat Josh Neer in a non-title fight for Bellator. He's now moved into the top 10 of most national rankings. Huerta will be looking to bounce back after his lost to Curran in the tournament semifinals. He's 21-4-1 overall, however he has lost three of his past four fights. Other than Curran, he also has losses to Kenny Florian (UFC 87) and Gray Maynard, though both of those losses were by decision under the UFC banner. His lone win during the rough patch was to previously unbeaten Chad Hinton in the opening round of the Bellator tournament.
••• Before Huerta returns to the cage, at least three other Minnesotans will compete for Bellator. This Thursday, Minnesota's Travis "The Hurrican Reddinger will fight during Bellator's bantamweight (135 pounds) tournament. He's taking on Ulysses Gomez. The fight will be part of the Bellator 27 card, which takes place in San Antonio, Texas. A week from Thursday, Minnesota's Carey Vanier will be in action during a non-tournament bout. Vanier is taking on UFC veteran Rich Clementi at 155 pounds during Bellator 28. The event will be held in New Orleans. Then, on Thursday, Sept. 16, former University of Minnesota heavyweight wrestler Cole Konrad will return to the Bellator cage as part of the heavyweight tournament. Konrad will face Damian Grabowski in the tournament semifinals at Bellator 29. That event will be held in Milwaukee, Wis. Konrad originally is from Appleton, Wis. As always, the Bellator fights will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net each Thursday night. Check local listings for times as Fox Sports North tends to put Bellator on late at night, after Twins games. |
