Minnesota's Cole Konrad earned a decision victory Thursday night as part of the Bellator Heavyweight Tournament during the Bellator 25 live broadcast on Fox Sports Net. The event was held at the Chicago Theatre. Konrad, who is an assistant wrestling coach at Simley High School in Inver Grove Heights, was in the main event against Rogent Lloret. The former Gophers two-time NCAA wrestling champion used his outstanding grappling skills to put Lloret on the mat repeatedly throughout the fight. Konrad's wrestling didn't give Lloret much room to work. Lloret was considered maiinly a ground fighter with six of his nine wins (9-2-1) coming by submission. But Konrad never gave him an opening. Konrad's top game was effective once again, and the heavyweight prospect rolled to a unanimous decision victory and moved into the heavyweight tournament semifinals. Konrad is now 5-0 overall. This was his third consecutive decision victory. Konrad's win snapped Lloret's eight-fight winning streak. The tournament semifinals likely will be held some time in September, but Bellator has not yet officially announced a date. Fellow Minnesotan Travis "The Hurricane" Reddinger will get his shot in the Bellator bantamweight tournament on Sept. 2. Reddinger will face Ulysses Gomez in the quarterfinals. That event will take place at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, Texas. |
