For the first time ever, Brutaal Genesis is coming to Faribault.

Promoter Nick Gamst will host nine amateur fights on Friday night at the Faribault Armory (2831 Park Ave.) Tickets are $25 ($40 for cageside seats), and fights begin at 7 p.m.

Gamst has been running amateur shows for a few years now. He doesn’t allow former high school wrestling state champions, collegiate wrestlers or fighters who hold a belt in jiu-jitsu to fight as amateurs under the Brutaal Genesis label.

“You just get such a wide range of skill level in amateurs, so you get a lot of mismatches, especially in terms of technical skill,” Gamst said. “There are no knees and no elbows, and the amateurs do three three-minute rounds.”

Gamst said there isn’t a specific main event for Friday’s show. However, a heavyweight clash between Rochester’s Pete Paddock and Owatonna’s Andrew Lopez will wrap up the night. Gamst expects it to be a slugfest.

“They’re both hard hitters,” Gamst said. “Neither of them has had very much training, so they’re at the point where they need to decide if they want to get serious. But they both can dish out a butt-whooping and they can both take one, too.”

Also on the card is former Austin High School football player and wrestler Bobbe Dulitz.

Gamst said it’s a bit scary heading into a new market, especially when it comes to ticket sales.
